Topic 1: Introductions. Share a bit about yourself, your nursing experiences and background. At this point in your career, how do you feel that epidemiology has affected your nursing practice?

My name is Y C, my nursing specialty is Stepdown and Medical Surgical. I have been a nurse for 3 years. I currently work full time in a medical Surgical floor for the biggest public hospital in Florida. I recently transferred to this new hospital and It has been very challenging in the past weeks trying to transition into these different care level. I remained Per Diem with my previous employer in stepdown/ventilator unit. Prior to becoming a Nurse, I worked as a Medical Assistant in an ENT’s office. I have a pretty hectic life, I am a first-time mother of a 5-month-old baby and managing work and school. I have decided to further my education in order to have more autonomy. Also, I can also have a greater impact in patient’s life. As a practitioner, I can not only assist in patients healing but I can educate and assist in prevention of diseases. My ultimate goal is to complete my Master’s and practice as an ARNP. Epidemiology and health promotion are essential in healthcare. One most understand the patient’s condition how to prevent them and treat them.
